Happy Birthday Mirambeena Celebrating 26 Years!

On Wednesday 12th November Mirambeena celebrated its 26th birthday. We were very excited to see such a good turn out of families to join us on this occasion. The candles on the cake wouldn’t light due to the wind, but hey we sang happy birthday anyway!!

Also on the day, our Patron, founder of Mirambeena and children’s author, Yvonne Winer launched her latest book, Santa in a billabong. Yvonne personally signed lots of books for the children, many of whom had the delightful story which is set in the hot Australian Christmas weather, read to them by their parents in attendance. A fun afternoon was had by all. Earlier in the day dome faces had been painted and the children also decorated their own personal patty cake to take home.

Happy birthday Mirambeena. Here’s to another 26 years!!!

End of Year Break Up Thursday 12 December

Well we are rapidly approaching the ‘silly season’!! As children leave the centre for holidays, those children remaining are getting organized for our end of year breakup.

This will follow our usual format whereby we start the evening’s proceedings with a family barbecue at 4.00pm. Then around 5.00 the children will sing a few of their favourite songs they have learnt throughout the year, short and sweet speeches will be given and then Santa will arrive to present the Mirambeena Children with a book as a gift. The afternoon should conclude by 6.00pm.

Mirambeena Staff Christmas Party

Some of Mirambeena staff enjoyed each others’ company at Everest Spice on Saturday for a final get together. It is always good to chat in an informal setting away from the busyness of having children in the vicinity and the phone ringing. We are all looking forward to having a holiday to rejuvenate ourselves before another busy year starts.

Darcy's Visit to Nepal

During the year, relief staff are often called upon to fill any staff vacancies due to illness, appointments or holidays.  On one of these occasions an enthusiastic Darcy helped us out.

Currently Darcy is on the other side of the world to Mirambeena visiting villages in Kathmandu - Nepal with a group of 20 people from Australia.  The group of volunteers have gone equipped with backpacks full of pencils, books, clothes, and other gifts that will help these children and brighten their days.  As well as playing, singing songs and dancing with these vibrant children, the volunteers will spend time with their families, learning all about their culture.  Darcy has remarked that “despite the poverty in some of these villages, everyone is so beautiful and happy and so full of love.”  We look forward to seeing more photos and hearing about all the amazing stories Darcy has to share from her journey to Nepal.

Here is a photo of Darcy spreading the love with one of the beautiful little girls in Kathmandu :)

Bits 'n Pieces

Our latest highly colourful T shirts are now on sale. A big thankyou to our staff member Heather for the lovely tie dyed effects on these. T shirts can be purchased for $8; with the Mirambeena logo screen printed onto them. Not only are these advertising our child care centre but are a great item of clothing for the children to wear so that Mums don’t have to worry about good clothing getting dirty. These shirts are so colourful, other paint and dirt will be camouflaged well!!

Working Bee - Sunday November 10

This was our 5th and final working bee for the year. Approximately 26 parents attended along with 6 staff. A big thankyou to those people for another wonderful couple of hours well spent, making our child care setting look even better . The grounds looked so much more refreshed after all your work; lots of raking, digging, planting, trimming, decobwebbing, sealing and sweeping.

Fund Raising Monster Garage Sale - Sunday November 10

Mirambeena Children’s Centre undertook its very first garage sale to raise some funds for the centre but also allowing for parents to have a clean up at home and donate any unwanted items as part of recycle week.

The first customers arrived at 6.30am on Sunday morning, and the last customer left at 3.30pm!  So it was a very big day out in the hot sun. A big thank you goes to our families for their kind donations of goods to sell. In particular a big thankyou to those wonderful committee members who manned the stall during the entire day, but also spent much time behind the scenes sorting, pricing, setting and packing up. It was a huge job!

Preparing Your Kindy Aged Child for Prep

Recently I participated in a Toowoomba workshop attended by other kindergarten teachers, a school Principal and some prep teachers. Among other topics, we discussed some indicators for prep readiness.

Some of these were

  • Does your kindergarten aged child follow instructions?
  • Can your child get their message across easily and clearly so that others can understand?
  • Can he/she recognize his/her name?
  • Can he/she hold a pencil and scissors correctly?
  • Is your kindy aged child able to problem solve? ie. use their coping skills to deal with situations
  • Is your child confident?
  • When attending child care is your child able to sit during group time?
  • Is your child able to open a lunch box, unwrap food portions, place a straw in a popper?
  • Is your child able to look after his/her belongings?
  • Whilst attending day care is your child happy to talk in front of the group of children?
  • Is your child engaged in activities whilst at childcare or kindy?

Until next time
